  • Abbe Institute for Foundations

Ernst Abbe, probably one of Jena's most famous personalities, created the Carl Zeiss Foundation, a unique form of social entrepreneurship that was also committed to science. The Ernst Abbe Foundation - which emerged from the Carl Zeiss Foundation in Jena - is also committed to this tradition. It promotes scientific research more than almost any other foundation in Thuringia and always strives to achieve a fine balance between scientific achievement, technical implementation and socio-political responsibility.

These guiding principles are also adopted by the Abbe Institute for Foundations at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, a department of the Ernst Abbe Foundation founded on 17 January 2005.

To this end the Institute supervises interdisciplinary projects in the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics, and it studies and develops legal and economic aspects of the foundation's work.

Moreover, it is laying the groundwork for a centre of excellence within the field of foundations. It is primarily targeted towards foundations in the former Eastern German states, where - according to the latest figures published by the Federal Association of German Foundations - very few new foundations are established.

Managing Director of the Abbe Institute for Foundations is Prof. Dr. Christian Fischer.
